Baby Matilda was thrilled to hear she had made the top 10 most popular baby names for 2021.

Thirty years ago, Jessica and Matthew were Canberra’s most popular baby names. Head all the way back to 1950 and it was babies named Margaret and Robert dominating Canberra’s parks and playground. Today, Oliver, Henry and Charlotte are the most popular baby names in Canberra for 2021.
Charlotte is a repeat winner, having also topped the most popular baby names list of 2020, 2017, 2015, 2012, 2006 and 2005. In fact, since 2003, Charlotte has made it into the top 10 every year.
Coming in as the second most popular name for girls in 2021 was Matilda.

Parents Stephanie and Sam Oliver (two names that featured heavily on the most popular baby names lists throughout the early 1990s) were thrilled to welcome baby Matilda Louise in late August.
After pulling together a shortlist of names but not landing on a favourite, Steph and Sam decided to wait until they met their baby to choose a name.
By the time they got to the hospital, the parents-to-be had narrowed it down to Matilda or Molly.
“Our midwife wrote the two names on a board in our room to help us decide. I was sure we were going to have a Molly, but it didn’t quite fit once we met our bub,” Steph explained.
“When she was born, we both agreed that Matilda was the name that suited her best. It suits our little girl perfectly.”
Steph and Sam were surprised to hear Matilda was the second most popular baby name in Canberra for 2021.
“We didn’t know any Matildas when looking at baby names, but since having Tilly, we now know a couple of other Matildas born within weeks of each other!”
Having been in the top 10 for the previous three years, it looks like there will be plenty of other Matildas for baby Tilly to befriend.
For boys, pushing William off the top spot in 2021, Oliver and Henry have come in as the equal most popular name for 2021. Both Oliver and Henry have been bouncing around the top 10 list for the past four years.
Oliver was the most popular name in 2019, 2017 and 2010, meaning that schools will soon have classrooms filled with Olivers.
As for Henry, it’s been in the top 10 six times in the last decade, but 2021 is the first year it’s come in at (equal) number 1.
In 2021, more than 6,330 babies were registered in the ACT.
